Why Age 7?
THE RIGHT TIME FOR A FIRST LOOK

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this stage, most children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, giving Dr. Alex a clear view of how the teeth, jaws, and bite are developing together.

An early evaluation doesn't always mean treatment will begin right away. In many cases, Dr. Alex simply monitors your child's growth and recommends the ideal time for any needed care. This approach helps avoid unnecessary treatment while making sure intervention happens at the right stage of development.

Signs to Watch For

WHEN TO SCHEDULE AN EVALUATION

Parents should consider scheduling an orthodontic evaluation if they notice:
-
Early or late loss of baby teeth
-
Difficulty biting or chewing
-
Mouth breathing, snoring, or speech issues
-
Thumb or finger-sucking habits
-
Crowded, overlapping, or protruding teeth
-
Crossbite, underbite, or overbite concerns
If you're unsure, that's okay. Dr. Alex is happy to take a look and let you know if anything needs attention.
Phase I & Phase II Treatment
a phased approach for growing smiles
PHASE I: EARLY TREATMENT (AGES 7-10)

Phase I addresses developing bite, crowding, or jaw growth issues while your child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth. Dr. Alex may use braces, expanders, or other appliances to create space, correct crossbites, or guide jaw growth. After Phase I, most children enter a resting period while Dr. Alex monitors their development.
PHASE II: COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENT (AGES 11-14)

Phase II begins once most permanent teeth have come in. This stage focuses on aligning teeth, refining the bite, and achieving the ideal result. Treatment may include braces or Invisalign.
Not every child needs both phases. Some children only need monitoring until they're ready for Phase II. Dr. Alex will recommend the approach that's right for your child and explain why.

Treatment Options for Children

THE RIGHT SOLUTION FOR YOUR CHILD'S NEEDS
Dr. Alex offers a full range of early treatment options, each tailored to your child's unique situation:
BRACES FOR KIDS
Reliable, effective, and always working. Braces are an excellent choice for children who need help with complex bite or alignment concerns. Available in metal or ceramic options.
INVISALIGN FIRST
Clear, removable aligners designed specifically for growing smiles. A great option for children who want flexibility and comfort with fewer office visits.

PALATE EXPANDERS
Gently widen the upper jaw to create space for permanent teeth and support healthy development. Most effective between ages 7 and 12.
ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCES
Functional and orthopedic appliances like the Herbst or reverse pull headgear help correct overbites and underbites during key growth windows.
Your Child's First Visit
A COMFORTABLE, POSITIVE EXPERIENCE
During your child's first evaluation at Alex Orthodontics, Dr. Alex will:

-
Review medical and dental history
-
Perform a gentle clinical exam
-
Take digital images if needed
-
Discuss findings and explain whether treatment is recommended now or later
Many children don't need immediate treatment after this first visit. For those who do, Dr. Alex will outline all options and timing. You'll leave with clarity and confidence about your child's smile.

No referral is needed to schedule an evaluation.

Questions Parents Ask
WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD SEE AN ORTHODONTIST?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an evaluation by age 7. At this age, Dr. Alex can identify early signs of crowding, bite issues, or jaw growth concerns before they become more complex.
DOES EARLY TREATMENT MEAN SHORTER TREATMENT LATER?

In many cases, yes. Addressing foundational issues like jaw alignment or crowding early often makes Phase II treatment shorter, simpler, and more predictable.
HOW DO I CHOOSE BETWEEN BRACES AND INVISALIGN FOR MY CHILD?

Dr. Alex will evaluate your child's needs, habits, and activity level to recommend the best option. Braces work continuously without relying on compliance, while Invisalign offers flexibility for older children who can wear aligners as directed. Both can create healthy, beautiful smiles.
