If you're a parent in Huntington or the surrounding Long Island communities, you've probably wondered at some point: when is the right time to think about orthodontics for my child?
Maybe your pediatric dentist mentioned something about your child's bite. Maybe you've noticed a little crowding as their adult teeth start coming in. Or maybe you're simply trying to stay ahead of the curve and make the best decision for your family.
Whatever brought you here, you're in the right place. And the answer may surprise you.
THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ORTHODONTISTS RECOMMENDS AGE 7

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that every child receive their first orthodontic evaluation no later than age 7. That might sound early, especially when most of their baby teeth are still in place, but there's a very specific reason behind this guideline.
By age 7, your child's first permanent molars and incisors have typically come in. This combination of baby and adult teeth, known as mixed dentition, gives an orthodontist the information needed to evaluate how the jaw is growing, whether there's enough space for incoming permanent teeth, and if the bite is developing the way it should.
An evaluation at this age doesn't mean your child will need treatment right away. In fact, most children won't. But it does allow your orthodontist to monitor development and recommend the ideal time to begin, if treatment is needed at all.
WHAT DOES AN EARLY ORTHODONTIC EVALUATION LOOK LIKE?
At Alex Orthodontics, I take a thorough, personalized approach to every evaluation. During your child's first visit, I'll look at how their teeth, jaw, and bite are developing together. This includes checking for common concerns like crowding, crossbites, open bites, overbites, and habits such as prolonged thumb-sucking that can affect long-term alignment.
I also uses advanced 3D imaging and digital scanning technology to see what's happening beneath the surface, including missing teeth, impacted teeth, or teeth that may be coming in at unusual angles. These tools provide a level of detail that helps her create a clear, individualized picture of your child's orthodontic health.
The visit is comfortable, low-pressure, and designed to give you clear answers. You'll leave knowing exactly where your child stands and what, if anything, the next steps look like.
WHY EARLY EVALUATIONS MATTER FOR YOUR CHILD'S SMILE
Some orthodontic issues are much easier to address while your child's jaw is still actively growing. Early intervention, sometimes called Phase 1 treatment, can help guide jaw development, create room for permanent teeth, and reduce or even prevent the need for more complex treatment later on.
For example, a narrow upper jaw can be gently expanded with an orthodontic appliance during the growth phase, potentially eliminating the need for surgical intervention as a teenager. Crowding issues caught early can often be managed more simply and more comfortably than if they're addressed after all permanent teeth have erupted.
Not every child needs Phase 1 treatment. But knowing the right window to act, and having a board-certified orthodontist watching for it, makes a meaningful difference in outcomes and overall treatment experience.
WHAT IF YOUR CHILD IS ALREADY PAST AGE 7?
If your child is 8, 10, 12, or older and hasn't had an orthodontic evaluation yet, there's no need to worry. It's never too late to schedule that first visit. Many patients begin orthodontic treatment in their teen years, and today's options, from traditional braces to Invisalign, make it possible to achieve beautiful, lasting results at virtually any age.
Whether your child is 7 or 17, the most important step is the same: getting a professional evaluation from an orthodontic specialist who can guide you with clarity, honesty, and expertise.
