Braces vs. Invisalign: Which Is Right for Your Child?

One of the most common questions parents ask when they visit Alex Orthodontics is simple...should my child get braces or Invisalign?

It's a great question, and there's no single answer that works for everyone. The right choice depends on your child's specific orthodontic needs, their age and maturity level, and what matters most to your family. The good news is that both options deliver excellent results when prescribed by a board-certified orthodontist who understands when and how to use each one.
Here's what Huntington families should know about both options, and how I help each patient find the right fit.
HOW TRADITIONAL BRACES WORK
Traditional metal braces remain one of the most reliable and effective tools in orthodontics. Small metal brackets are bonded to each tooth and connected by a wire that applies gentle, continuous pressure to guide teeth into their ideal positions. I adjust the wire periodically throughout treatment to keep everything moving according to plan.
Modern braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more efficient than what many parents remember from their own childhood. They're also incredibly versatile. Braces can treat a wide range of orthodontic concerns, from mild crowding to complex bite issues that involve significant jaw alignment correction.
One of the biggest advantages of braces is consistency. They work around the clock because they're fixed in place, which means treatment progress doesn't depend on your child remembering to wear anything. For younger patients or those with more complex cases, that reliability can make a real difference in both results and treatment time.
HOW INVISALIGN WORKS FOR KIDS AND TEENS
Invisalign uses a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners that fit snugly over the teeth and gently shift them into place over time. Each set of aligners is worn for about one to two weeks before being replaced by the next in the series. The aligners are virtually invisible when worn, and they're removable for eating, brushing, and flossing.
Invisalign First is designed specifically for younger patients (typically ages 6 to 10) who are still in the mixed dentition phase, meaning they have a combination of baby and adult teeth. Invisalign Teen is tailored for adolescents and includes features like compliance indicators that help parents and me track whether the aligners are being worn consistently.
For the right candidate, Invisalign offers clear advantages: it's discreet, comfortable, and makes oral hygiene easier during treatment since there are no brackets or wires to clean around. Many teens appreciate the confidence that comes with a nearly invisible option, especially during school and social activities.
SO WHICH ONE IS BETTER?
Neither option is universally better. The right choice depends entirely on your child's individual case. Here are some of the factors I evaluate when recommending a treatment plan:
Case complexity. Braces are often the better choice for more complex orthodontic issues, such as significant bite correction, rotated teeth, or cases that require precise vertical movement. Invisalign has advanced significantly and can now treat many of the same cases, but there are still situations where brackets and wires offer more control.
Patient age and compliance. Invisalign requires discipline. Aligners need to be worn 20 to 22 hours per day to be effective. For younger children or patients who may struggle with that level of responsibility, braces can be the more predictable option. For mature teens and motivated patients, Invisalign works beautifully.
Lifestyle considerations. Some families prioritize aesthetics, especially for teens who are self-conscious about their appearance. Others prefer the durability and low-maintenance nature of braces. I take the time to understand what matters to your family so the recommendation fits your child's life, not just their teeth.
Treatment goals and timeline. Depending on the complexity of the case, one option may be more efficient than the other. I use advanced digital treatment planning to map out the entire process before treatment begins, so you'll know exactly what to expect with either approach.
HOW DR. ALEX PERSONALIZES EVERY TREATMENT PLAN
At Alex Orthodontics, there is no one-size-fits-all recommendation. I evaluate every patient individually using a combination of clinical expertise and advanced technology, including 3D digital scanning and in-house 3D printing, to create a treatment plan that's tailored to your child's specific needs.
As the only doctor who treats patients at Alex Orthodontics, I personally oversee every step of your child's care from the initial consultation through the final result. That continuity means I can adapt the plan in real time as your child grows and responds to treatment, something that's difficult to achieve in larger practices where patients see different providers at each visit.
Whether the recommendation is braces, Invisalign, or a combination of both, you can trust that the plan is built around your child's best outcome, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
WHAT HUNTINGTON PARENTS SHOULD KNOW BEFORE DECIDING
The most important step isn't choosing between braces and Invisalign. It's choosing the right orthodontist to guide you through the decision.
A board-certified orthodontist has the specialized training to evaluate your child's case thoroughly and recommend the approach that will deliver the best long-term results. General dentists and direct-to-consumer aligner companies may offer orthodontic services, but they don't bring the same depth of expertise to complex treatment planning.
Families across Huntington, Greenlawn, Cold Spring Harbor, Northport, Centerport, and the surrounding Long Island communities choose Alex Orthodontics because we combine that level of expertise with a genuinely personal approach to care. Every recommendation is made with your child's health, comfort, and confidence in mind.
